Annamalai University, one of the largest residential universities in Southern Asia, was established and incorporated in the year 1929 as per the Annamalai University Act, 1928 (Tamil Nadu Act1 of 1929). Then the Annamalai University Act, of 1928 was repealed and replaced with the AnnamalaiUniversity Act, of 2013 (Tamil Nadu Act 20 of 2013). This university has, since its inception, aimed at imparting education in all fields of knowledge to thousands of students from all over the country and abroad. This University has grown into a premier institution of higher learning and research in the past 92 years. The Annamalai University DDE (Directorate of Distance Education) was established in 1979 and offered different Programmes of Study. It is credited with the biggest enrolment and is well equipped with a computer and other infrastructure. This university has also the unique distinction of being the first in India, to offer Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Applied Psychology, Chemistry,
